Embroidered Abayas
Kolkata has been stitching for two hundred years. These are the abayas where that shows most — gold and silver threadwork, zardozi, tatreez cross-stitch and hand-set beads.
Embroidery is where an abaya stops being a cover-up and becomes a piece you are proud to wear. In this collection you will find gold vine and scroll work, silver roses and blossoms, zardozi tulips, traditional Palestinian tatreez cross-stitch, soutache, and hand-beaded florals, pearl drops and crystal cascades.
Handwork means small variations from piece to piece — that is the mark of something made by hand. Embellished abayas are best dry cleaned to keep the work looking new.
Embroidered Abayas – FAQs
What is tatreez embroidery?
Tatreez is traditional Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery, usually in geometric and floral motifs. It appears on our Lamia and Hana abayas.
What is zardozi?
Zardozi is a heavy, raised embroidery using metallic thread, beads and sequins, with a long history in the Indian subcontinent.
How do I care for an embroidered abaya?
Dry clean if possible. If washing at home, hand wash cold, inside out, and never wring or tumble dry.
